Vizianagaram: After mangoes and pine apples, now another seasonal fruit is flooding the market with the consumers getting them at cheaper price than ever before. Kurupam, Komarada, Salur, Makkuva, S.Kota, Parathipuram and some other agency Mandals are producing large quantity of Jackfruits and the tribal farmers are positioning them to the nearest markets, towns.

The seasonal fruit has high demand in cities. The aroma and sweetness of the fruit is attracting many buyers . Even wayside vendors have opened opening retail outlets and selling each dozen of aril(tonalu) at Rs.12-15.

The nuts also have high demand in cities and towns as catering companies and hotels are preparing biriyani with Jack nut, for veggies. Nowadays Panasa Kaya biriyani is one of the special itemsat every function.

Presently, the fruits are available in the market at lesser price as the yield is very high in this season at hilly areas. Each tree produces more than 200 nuts and most of the hill areas have many of trees in the agency mandals.

Jackfruit, the biggest fruit in the world, is available for less than Rs.40 in rural areas and in towns. Consumers can get a huge fruit at Rs.100 also. Farmers are also selling them on the roadsides.

A basket full of arils can be extracted from each fruit and around 10 people can consume them all the day. Locals are purchasing a big fruit and sharing the arils among the families.

Jackfruit seeds are also good for health and they are consuming by boilingand mixing them with chilli powderand salt. The seeds are also used as ingredients in curries which is consumed along with poori, roti, pulka.

K.Narayana, a fruit seller in Vizianagaramsaid, “We bought them from S.Kota and Araku areas at Rs.30 each and are selling them at Rs.60. The bigger fruit weighs around 7-8 kilograms and costs around Rs.100-120. We are selling more than 50-70 fruits per day and earning around Rs.1200.”

Weekly markets in those areas are flooded with these fruits and wholesale traders are purchasing these at low price and exporting them to Vizag and other bigger cities. Kasipatnam, Kuneru, Kurupam, Parvathipuram weekly bazaars are famous for these fruits during this season.
