Kurnool: Kasireddy Venkata Reddy Government Junior College, a pioneering college for women in Rayalaseema region, has emerged as the fore runner in the implementation of the greenery programme ‘VanamManam’ launched by the state government. The college has an age-old practice of taking attendance only after plantation or gardening work has been done.

Established up in 1962, the college is occupying top position among government colleges for women. The degree and junior colleges spread across 13 acres of land has over 3500 students. Students of the Botany department are required to plant at least a plant either in the college campus or in the surrounding areas per year and nurse them till they go out of the college.

Botany students are divided into 9 groups each having 60 students. Rare flora and medicinal plants procured from nurseries and Nallamala forest region are planted by the students. The students who do not participate in gardening activity are marked absent for the day. The students are also raising vegetable crops in addition to medicinal plants and fruit-bearing plants.

The leftover food from the college hostel is used as manure for the plants. Organic vegetables are used to cook food in the hostel. The greenery in the college creates a salubrious environment and the moment one gets into the college, huge trees welcome the visitors.

The college seniors guide the juniors in plantingsamplings. Students also take the plants from the college and sensitise people in the community on raising the trees. If every student emulates KVR College, the forest cover would greatly increase and posterity would derive benefit from this practice.
