Vijayawada: Two pilgrims were killed and six others injured in a road accident on Tuesday when they were returning home after taking a holy dip in River Krishna on the last day of the Pushkaralu.

According to the police, the families of Venkata Ramana and Appala Swamy of Tolapi village of Ponduru Mandal in Srikakulam district came to the city in a car on Monday. They had a holy dip on Tuesday and were returning home when their car hit a screw bridge and turned turtle causing grievous injuries to the occupants.

Pydi Venkata Ramana (40) and Pydi Harsha Vardhan (11) died on the spot. P Appayaamma (60), G Sarada (30), S Bhulakshmi ((35), Pydi Appala Swamy ((37), Jayasurya (7) and Mahesh (6) were injured and shifted by the police to a private hospital. The condition of Appayamma is said to be serious.

Minister for Roads and Transportation Siddha Raghava Rao rushed to the spot and enquired about the incident. Government Whip K Ravi Kumar and Srikakulam Parliament Member K Rammohan Naidu visited the injured at the hospital.
