Four held for dowry harassment
Begumpet police on Tuesday arrested four persons including the husband of a woman who had committed suicide over alleged dowry harassment.
Hyderabad: Begumpet police on Tuesday arrested four persons including the husband of a woman who had committed suicide over alleged dowry harassment.
The arrested include S Sashidhar, his parents S Rajalingam, S Manjula and his aunt S Ramani. Efforts are underway to arrest Sashidhar’s sister Sirisha, his relatives Manoj and Shiv Kumar, police said.
Sashidhar’s wife Bhagya Lakshmi (30) hanged herself to death at her house in Begumpet on March 25. Her father lodged a complaint alleging that the woman ended her life because of harassment over dowry by her husband, in-laws and some others.
Police said Bhagya Lakshmi’s marriage was performed with Sashidhar, a software employee, on March 25, 2016. The couple lived in Atomic Minerals Directorate’s (AMD) residential quarters in Begumpet as Bhagya Lakshmi worked as an assistant in AMD.
However, Sashidhar, his parents and other family members allegedly subjected Lakshmi to harassment demanding additional dowry. She had even approached the police in October 2016 and police counseled the couple along with the elders of both sides for three days in early November. Lakshmi wanted to file a case and requested the counseling centre to close the matter, police said.
But, she did not lodge a complaint and took the extreme step on her wedding anniversary. Arrests were made following a case filed by the woman’s father.
