Rajamahendravaram: The enquiry of the Justice Somayajulu Commission, which was appointed to enquire into stampede incident at Pushkara Ghat during Godavari Pushkaram 2015, has reached final stage. The commission will close its enquiry on Thursday and submit its report to the government. On the penultimate day of its tenure, the commission has asked the advocate Mupalla Subba Rao who is arguing on behalf of the victims of the stampede, to put his arguments.

Speaking on the occasion, Muppalla Subba Rao refuted with the arguments made by the government counsel that the stampede took place due to the arrival of passengers in seven trains at a time. He questioned on why the authorities have failed to divert the crowd to other ghats as the chief minister was taking bath at Pushkar ghat at 6.26 am on the inaugural day of Godavari Pushkarams.

He made it clear that that the officials could have seen rush of passengers at Pushkar ghat through CC cameras. He faulted the authorities for their complacency and for their failure in crowd management. He observed that the barricades which have been erected to control the crowd have been removed to make way for the officials to the Pushkar ghat.

Refuting with the authorities’ claim that nine ambulances have been placed at the ghat, he has shown evidence that only two ambulances were placed. He came down heavily on the medical and health departments for failing to provide primary treatment for the people who were suffocated to death. He informed that injured persons have been taken to the hospital after more than six hours which has caused more death tolls.

He did also mention that no oxygen cylinders were placed at the Pushkar ghat for emergency purpose. He explained that government has paid compensation to only 31 injured persons whereas 51 persons were injured in the stampede which shows the lack of coordination. He made it clear that the police, medical and health departments were responsible for the loss of lives in the stampede.
