Hyderabad: The Banjara Hills police on Thursday arrested a 24-year-old woman, who cheated her friends by claiming to be a cancer patient and pooled around Rs 21 lakh towards medical expenses.

According to the police, Samia, a resident of Malakpet, frequently visited Omega Cancer Hospital when her father Abdul Hafeez underwent a surgery for mouth cancer.

While discussing about her father’s cancer treatment with hospital Managing Director Mohan Vamshi, she secretly video recorded the conversation. Later, she edited the video to her advantage and posted it on Facebook claiming that she was suffering with cancer and needed financial help, police said.

Her friends living abroad were moved by her plight and sent around Rs 21 lakh towards medical expenses. The con woman spent the money lavishly but continued to post videos saying the treatment was in progress, the police said.

In one post, she claimed that she was operated on and was recuperating in the hospital. One of the friends who extended financial help was visiting Hyderabad exactly at the same time and reached Omega Hospital to visit Samia, only to find that she took all her friends for a ride, police said.

The visitor explained everything to the hospital management, which in turn lodged a complaint against Samia for bringing disrepute to their hospital. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and arrested the woman.
