Vijayawada: Many eyebrows raised following the death of Sowmya, a Class IX girl at Patmata Government High School, due to eve-teasing on her way to school and back home. The sensitivity of case can be gauged by the fact that neither teachers nor her parents had no idea of her suffering at the hands of a habitual offender who is at large now. She reportedly hanged leaving many doubts over possible reasons for taking the extreme step.

The police initially registered a case as suspicious death. When the possible reasons that forced her to end life came to light, the cops changed their stance and added harassment by a youth Nani. The anger of public and relatives can be understood by the suffering of victim four days before her death.

Parents, who have no time to know what is happening to their girls when they are allowed to move between school and home, have many lessons in Sowmya’s death. “She was friendly. We all surprised why she took the drastic step. Many questions still need to be answered,” says Basha, who stays in the neighbourhood at Sanatnagar.

“She is an average student. She never reported to anybody about a youth harassing her.. She is as good as our other students,” says a teacher.

The teacher on condition of anonymity said that the other girls told them that the youth haunting her had spit on her face when she had called him ‘anna’ (brother). “She must have hurt. The same day we heard about her unnatural death,” she adds.

Students of the school are also feeling bad about whatever happened to their classmate. They are in no mood to comment.
“I have seen many schools where some youth wait outside sitting on parked bikes and poke the girls and play many tricks to attract their attention in the name of love when the girls enter and come out of the school gate. After making friendship for a few days, they advance further creating real trouble for girls.

Such things will lead to teasing and hate. I sense danger for girls who talk with outsiders outside the school. Neither their parents nor teachers know what is happening on the way to school and way back home,” Indrani, a parent laments.
