Police seized 51 red sander logs weighing 1.5 tonnes and worth Rs 1.2 cr and a motorcycle from them. The inter-state smugglers were identified as Kommi Mahesh (27), Mohammad Asif (32); Donthu Sai Varaprasad (39) and Narala Pulinder Reddy (39).

Interacting with the media persons at Atmakur police station on Saturday, Superintendent of Police PHD Ramakrishna said that inter-state smugglers Sai Varaprasad, N Pulinder Reddy, K Mahesh and Asif were transporting red sander logs from Somasila and Ananthasagaram forest areas to other parts of the country.

These smugglers were exporting the logs with the help of 51 coolies who cut logs in the forest, he added. “Acting on a tip off, Marripadu police nabbed Mahesh, Mohhamad Asif at Gangunta cross road and seized 16 logs from them.

Meanwhile, Ananthasagaram police took D Varaprasad into custody in Bommavaram forest area and seized 17 logs and Somasila police apprehended N Pulinder Reddy at Chilakalamarri,” explained the SP.

The SP said the Rapur police nabbed 15 coolies at Maddelamadugu Centre close to Rapur mandal headquarters when they tried to flee away from the place. The coolies who hail from Pangali village were involved in cutting of red sander logs in Ananthasagaram, Somasila and also in Kaluvoya forest areas, said the SP.

“Smugglers have been influencing some villagers at Veligonda forest area under 9 PS limits. We have been providing counselling to the villagers not to involve in such red sander smuggling activity,” said Ramakrishna.

He also appealed to the people to come forward to curb illegal red sander smuggling in Udayagiri, Atmakur and also in Venkatagiri forest areas. Atmakur DSP KSSV Subba Reddy, Circle Inspector Sk.Khajavali, Ananthasagaram, Rapur, Somasila and Marripadu Sub-Inspectors were also present.
