Hyderabad: A 24-year-old woman was allegedly burnt alive by her husband for not getting a seat in MBBS. The incident took place in L B Nagar police station limits on Saturday night.

The victim, Harika who hails from Khammam district, was married to her cousin Rishi Kumar (29), a resident of Rocktown Colony of L B Nagar, about a couple of years ago. The accused had allegedly claimed to be working for an IT company at the time of marriage.

However, he made her take coaching classes to fulfil his ambition of making her a doctor. “He was also upset that she was unable to get the seat despite his sacrifices like staying alone while she stayed at the hostel, with the intention of not disturbing her during her coaching,” said Sridhar, the victim’s brother.

According to her relatives, the accused was gifted two acres of land and Rs 10 lakh in cash at the time of marriage as dowry. In spite of that his family allegedly demanded more dowry.

The police arrested the accused and registered a case against his mother and father, Hari Chand (Retd CI - Adilabad) under sections 302 (murder) and 304 B (dowry death) of IPC and began investigation.
