Hyderabad: Two L & T workers were asphyxiated inside a manhole when they tried to remove “centring material” from newly-laid water pipeline chamber near Uppal Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Santosh (28) and Vijay (25). The duo hails from Odisha. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Director Dana Kishore has ordered an inquiry by Director (Technical) Suryanarayan into the matter besides announcing compensation of Rs 10 lakh to victim’s families.
The manual scavenging is banned under The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013; however, the authorities say that they were not assigned to clean the manhole.
