IITs Dominate the Engineering Ranking in India

BENGALURU: The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India, released the India Rankings 2016 on the 4th of April this year. Announced by the MHRD Chief Smriti Irani, the rankings have been completed under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in various categories like University, Engineering, Management, and Pharmacy. The institutions were assessed and given scores on the basis of teaching, learning and resources; research, consulting and collaborative performance; graduation outcome; outreach and inclusivity; and perception. In the engineering category, the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) occupied the top 10 spots of the rankings, reflecting their stand out qualities in catering technical education. Here’s the list of the Top 10 Engineering Colleges according to the scores gained by these institutions in the India Rankings 2016, reports the Times of India.

1. IIT, Madras:

With a score of 89.42 in the ranking analysis, IIT Madras (now Chennai) tops the list of colleges in the category of Engineering. Founded in 1959, IIT, Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students, and 1250 administrative and supporting staff. It is a self-contained campus situated in about 250 hectares of land.

2. IIT, Bombay:

The technology institute was founded in 1958 and is located in the city of Mumbai. IIT Bombay gained a score of 87.67 in the India Rankings 2016 and is second only to IIT, Madras. Located in Powai, one of the northern suburbs of Mumbai, the residents of the institute enjoy the perks of being in the spirited lifestyle of the financial capital of India, while at the same time gaining the serenity of a campus known for its natural beauty.

3. IIT, Kharagpur:

Established in the year 1951, IIT, Kharagpur is the oldest IIT in the country and has scored 83.91 in the ranking assessments by the Union Government. The students and alumni of IIT Kharagpur are informally referred to as KGPians. Among all IITs, IIT Kharagpur has the largest campus (2,100 acres), the most departments, and the highest student enrollment.

4. IIT, Delhi:

Located in the capital city of India, IIT, Delhi was started in the year 1961. The institute scored 82.03 in the ranking analysis and acquired the fourth spot in the list. Its campus of 325 acres is surrounded by the beautiful Hauz Khas area and monuments such as the Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple. IIT Delhi is one of the two educational institutes in India which have been listed in Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) list of top 200 universities globally in 2015.

5. IIT, Kanpur:

Founded in 1959, IIT, Kanpur is located in Uttar Pradesh and is ranked fifth according to the India Rankings 2016. The institute scored 81.07 in the government’s assessments of these engineering colleges. IIT Kanpur was the first institute in India to offer Computer Science education under the guidance of economist John Kenneth Galbraith.

6. IIT, Roorkee:

It’s been 15 years since this IIT Roorkee was established in 2001 and has done quite well in gaining the sixth place amongst other veteran IITs. The institute gained 78.68 in the ranking analysis.

7. IIT, Hyderabad:

One of the newest IITs in the country was established in 2008 in the city of Hyderabad. The technology institute scored 77.23, which is quite good for a relatively new IIT. IIT Hyderabad runs from a temporary campus located at Ordnance Factory Medak's estate in Yeddumailaram, while the permanent campus in Kandi is being constructed.

8. IIT, Gandhinagar:

Founded in 2008 as well, the Gandhinagar based IIT acquired a score of 75.21 in the ranking assessments and found itself at the eighth spot in the list. The Institute began operating in a temporary campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda, mentored by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

9. IIT, Ropar-Rupnagar:

The institute recorded a 74.89 weightage in the ranking assessments and is the newest IIT in the country. Founded in 2009, in Ropar, Punjab, the college is placed at the ninth position in the list. The classes for academic session 2008–2009 of IIT Ropar were held at IIT Delhi and the Institute started functioning from its transit campus in Rupnagar in August 2009.

10. IIT, Patna:

This institute is based in Patna, Bihar and was established in 2008. It’s one of the newest IITs in the country and completes the list with a score of 74.68. IIT Patna is part of National Knowledge Network (NKN) which provides a high speed core networking for all the knowledge related institutions in India.
