Sravana Masam, which is the most awaited month for Telugus, usually falls between August and September. This year it started from August 15. This month is auspicious as the birth star of Lord Vishnu is Sravana Nakshatra. In fact, most people wait for this month as marriages, house-warming functions are usually held during this period.

The four Fridays of this masam are celebrated by worshipping Goddess Mahalakshmi who is the wife of Lord Vishnu. The second Friday is celebrated as Varalakshmi Vratam. On this day a special puja is performed to Goddess Lakshmi. Women usually fast the entire day and give away ‘Tambulam’ at the end of this day.


Not only Fridays, but Tuesdays are also auspicious in the month of Sravana. Newly married women usually perform ‘Sravana Mangala Gowri Vratam’ on Tuesdays of this month where they worship Godess Parvathi Devi in the form of Mangala Gowri for the welfare of their husband.


Besides Varalakshmi Vratam, other festivals like ‘Naga Panchami’, ‘Sri Krishna Janmastami’, and ‘Rakhi Pournami’ also fall in the same month. The Sravana Masam this year ends on September 4. We all know, women and jewellery go together well and this month for investing in jewellery.


Various designs are introduced into showrooms this month to attract the jewellery lovers. Apart from light-weight and traditional ornaments, jewellers say that there is a growing demand for fusion jewellery this year. They say that a combination of low-carat diamond-studded ornaments embedded with rows of pearl and ruby, a fusion of emerald and diamond neckpieces, and intricately crafted polka jewellery are in vogue.


Several showrooms has also announced a special offer of zero making charges on diamond and up to 50 per cent off on making charges of gold jewellery, with ‘Sravana Sukravaram’ and ‘Varalakshmi Puja’ being celebrated in the month of Sravanam. There is also a demand for flowers during this month and florists make hay out of this.


The total month is filled with pujas and flowers play a major role to perform it. Hence the prices go up especially in this month with demand from people. Many couples tie knot and wait for this month to get married. Many other functions are also celebrated during this month apart from the usual festival.


College going girl find this month more interesting because Friday’s make their day out of the entire week. Girls get themselves decorated in traditional attires and visit temples to worship Goddess Mahalakshmi. A wide range of special sarees are also designed for ‘Varalakshmi Puja’. Women believe that positive things happen with performing the Vratam. Hence along with jewellery, sarees also add to their list of shopping for this month of festivals.
