About 500 girl students enrolled in Government Degree College, Golconda are on the brink of losing their academic year, due to lack of faculty. They are now putting united fight against high authorities in the Education Department, as faculty posts are yet to be sanctioned by the government officially.

The College, which has B Com, B A and B Sc (English and Urdu Medium), was started in 2015 with much hype, citing the prime objective of educating ‘girl child’ in Golconda area. With delay of sanctioned posts for lecturers, the College was officially attached with the City College, from where some of the visiting faculty provided classes to students, while others worked on contract basis.

Even though, the provisions could not reach the prevailing standards, the students were able to appear for examinations. However, no contracts were extended and students were left in the lurch.

“I am studying in second year and we are not prepared to face the next semester. Most of us do not even know which textbooks to follow, as none has clarified to us on changing syllabus. Even though there are problems of furniture, hygiene we never went on to complaint at the highest level till now. Lest the officials take some initiative, we will lose precious years of education,” said Fatima, one of the students.

To hold protest shortly
According to the students, the temporary faculty used to teach English, History, Economics and Arabic, but now rarely a subject is covered by the guest lecturers. After several representations to the City College authorities, they are now planning to protest in front of the Collegiate of Higher Education next week. In their representation they pointed out that because of lack of lecturers, the students were coming daily, sitting idle and returning to their houses.

“Since the government is claiming to uplift students under various schemes, it must focus on pathetic condition of Girls College. If the condition continues to remain like this, how can we make our way for a better future?” questioned a student on condition of anonymity, who will be leading the protest.

The official in-charge of the College point out at lack of government support for the institution. “Since there was no extension of contract, the decision lies with the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, who is currently on leave,” said the official.
