I cannot warn you enough about the pitiable diet on which we and our children are living today.  It is a cocktail of excess sugar, white flour, processed, fried topped with chemicals and pesticides destroying our bodies bombing our brains killing us slowly and steadily.

It’s about time that we wake up and have a complete makeover of our palate by moving back to a traditional health promoting Indian diet instead of consumption of white flour in form of breads, pastas, meats, sweets and high-fat dairy products that characterise a western diet.

It’s been nearly two decades since I improved my diet then studied and researched the effect of food on health and realised that the Indian diet was a life of complete balance promoting mental as well as physical wellbeing improving the body mind and spirit.

Let’s see what most traditional Indian diet consist of and how it amazingly it promotes health.

Vegetables and leafy greens - every meal consists of them they are packed with natural nutrients that can combat diseases and increase our immunity preventing, retarding and reversing diseases.

The natural colours present in our vegetables fight against free radical damage that clogs our arteries, causes several diseases and multiple cancer cells.

Spices – Research has documented that spices are a valuable tool that to aid digestion, increase immunity and prevents degenerative diseases including cancer. Turmeric, cumin, coriander seeds, cinnamon and clove to are known for their therapeutic benefit. India is the home of spices and centuries have been used as preservatives, antibiotics and in ayurvedic medicine in India.

Rock salt – is being used since ancient times in our food and has amazing curative benefits. They have more than 85 trace minerals in them that are essential for us.

Whole grains- unlike the rest of the world we have a huge variety to chose from whole wheat, bajra, jowar, rajgira, ragi, sama, brown rice, red rice to name a few. Whole grains contain fibers, which promote the slow release of sugars in the body satiates for a longer time result; one also feels fuller for a longer time prevents binging.

Lentils, pulses sprouts - are a part of our daily diet commonly called dal. They are excellent sources of protein. Unlike animal protein they do not elevate bad cholesterol actually helps reduce it. They sustain energy and strength. Traditionally they are served with rice.

Curd- is consumed daily in an Indian diet is a natural pro-biotic, which is essential for gut health.

Ghee - Ayurveda swears by it that ghee is the promoter of memory, intelligence it contains saturated fats and today’s science talks about the importance of having saturated fats in your diet daily. Ghee helps in absorption of Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. Ayurveda strongly believes that the usage of ghee is good for the bones and joints and also enhances your sex hormones.

Coconut- considered as a super food and it has been part of our food since centuries. It is lower cholesterol maintains blood sugar levels as well as improves thyroid function.
