Gender is not the problem; it is the result of the problem

The significance of education and awareness on gender issues is widely known. In this regard, renowned social activist, poet and author Kamla Bhasin spoke on the topic ‘‘Gender Inclusiveness of Excluded Communities: Political, Economic and Social Status’. The talk show was organised by ‘Beti Zindabad’ at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Bagh Lingampally over the weekend.

“Today many people do not know the difference between sex and gender and think that both are the same. Sex is decided after birth, but gender is introduced by society,” said Bhasin.

“Even today women are not “allowed” to go out at night. We do not have night blindness to stay at homes. This country is also for women and we have equal rights,” she asserted.

“It cannot be ignored that society has not giving equal importance to women. This is evident from rampant female infanticide,” said the activist, who has been actively engaged in addressing the issues related to development, education, gender and media for more than 35 years.

“Rape and sexual harassment happens every day. This is due to inbuilt misogyny and discrimination. Gender is not the problem; it is the result of the problem,” she shared.

Currently working with SANGAT (South Asian Feminist Network) and JOGORI (Women’s Resources and Training Centre), Bhasin organised a campaign ‘One Billion Rising’ five years ago in the struggle for equal rights for women. Highlighting the significance of the campaign, she said, “’One Billion Rising’ started in February 14, 2013 in 207 countries to strive for the basic rights for women. Our main objective is to set women free from discrimination. We are not against for men. We are striving hard to remove gender inequality from the society.”
