Hanamkonda: The observance of 28th Road Safety Week has began in Warangal Urban and Rural districts on Tuesday.

Marking the occasion, road safety promotional materials are released under the aegis of Warangal transport department on the sidelines of International Kite Festival at University Arts College grounds in Hanamkonda.

Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu released a CD of a short film on road safety while Warangal Urban District Collector Amrapali Kata released a banner. GWMC Mayor N Narender, Municipal Commissioner Shruti Ojha, Tourism and Cultural Department Secretary B Venkatesham, Motor Vehicle Inspector and in-charge Deputy Transport Commissioner (DTC) Kanchi Venu have taken part in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner of Police stressed on the need of adhering to safety measures while travelling on roads. Every year large numbers of precious lives were being lost while many were left crippled due to road accidents.

In view of such loss of lives, road safety week observance holds great significance. One could avert accidents if they stick to safety rules being circulated by the transport department and by being alert while driving on roads, Sudheer Babu added.

During the week-long campaign, variety of educational banners, safety posters, films, pocket guides and leaflets would be distributed promoting road safety measures among vehicle owners, in the community, schools, colleges, work places and on roads to reduce road accidents, in-charge DTC Venu informed.

‘The union ministry of road transport and highways 2015 report states that nearly 1,46,133 people lost their lives and 5,00,279 were injured in road accidents in India. The numbers were highest ever recorded in the history of the country and they represents a tenfold increase since 1970,’ he added.

About 40 per cent deaths in the world happen due to road accidents. Several surveys have indicated that lack of awareness and neglect towards safety rules caused road accidents. ‘A little amount of care and following safety rules could save precious lives,’ Venu pointed out.

Conducting medical camps for heavy vehicle drivers on January 18 and for auto rickshaw drivers on January 22, stage shows by ‘Dhoom Dhaam’ artists on January 20 and organising Cyclothon/Walkathon on January 23 are among the programmes planned over the next one week, he revealed.

At Bhupalpalli, District Collector A Murali, who released road safety pamphlets and stickers, has asked the officials to set up speed breakers at Bhupalpalli, Kataram, Eturunagaram and Mulug junctions along with sign boards indicating speed limit.

He also wanted the transport officials to procure breath analysers and laser speed guns to check drunken driving and those violate speed limit. Joint Collector D Amoy Kumar, District Revenue Officer P Mohan Lal and others present.
