Hanamkonda: The leaders of Congress SC Cell have demanded immediate action against University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao Podile for his alleged involvement in the death of the university student, Rohith Vemula.

Marking the first death anniversary of Rohith, a candle light vigil was observed at BR Ambedkar statue in Hanamkonda on Tuesday, under the aegis of Congress SC Cell.

Speaking on the occasion, the SC Cell chairman Polumari Vijay demanded removal of the V-C from his services. Similarly, Union ministers Smruti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya and V-C Appa Rao should be punished under the provisions of SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act, he asserted while adding that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has failed to express sympathy over the student’s death even as entire country condoled.

It was sad that the Union government, instead of punishing the V-C, has presented him with a scientific award, ‘Millennium Plaques Honour’ though many in the academic circles feel that Appa Rao was a ‘plagiarist’ and ‘substandard scholar’, the Congress leader noted.

Describing Rohith’s death as ‘socio-politico-institutional murder’, Vijay said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government were trying to suppress dalit student movements on the UoH campus as well as across the nation. The struggle against Appa Rao would continue until his removal from the post and arrest, he added.

Congress activists Mekala Upender, Naini Laxma Reddy, G Srinivas Reddy, M Sukumar, T Sudhakar, M Srinivas, Rajanikanth, A Ashok and others were present.

In another programme at Ramnagar in Hanamkonda, Kula Vivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham (KVPS) leaders S Babu, Aroori Kumar, T Uppalaiah, G Venkat and others have paid tributes to Rohith. They also wanted action against the V-C, Appa Rao, in order to do justice to Rohith.

Since BJP government came to power at the Centre, atrocities against dalits, tribals and minority communities have become rampant across the country.

In BJP ruled Gujarat, about 8,655 cases of attacks on SC/STs have reported during the past one year, while 7,144 cases in Rajasthan and 3,005 cases in Chhattisgarh were reported, they complained.

All the scholars and people, who uphold democratic tenets, should condemn such attacks, they added.
