Petrol bunks to sell Swakrushi dairy products

Warangal: Fetch your milk packets and other dairy products while refuelling your vehicle. Yes. The women-run Mulukanoor co-operative dairy (Swakrushi Milk) that tasted a stupendous success in its decade-and-a-half journey is all set to open its parlours in HPCL petrol bunks next week.

Started with a modest loan of Rs 3.36 crore and 67 dairy cooperatives in 2002, the Mulukanoor Women’s Co-operative Dairy (MWCD) now has 140 cooperatives with 22,000 members, whose share capital is worth around Rs 2.50 crore, besides their savings amounting to Rs 4 crore.

The dairy consolidated its position in the market that spread across undivided Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad districts. Beginning with milk procurement of just 1,400 on the first day, the dairy now procures 60,000 liters per day (LPD).

This is said to be phenomenal growth especially considering the fact that dairy’s range of procurement is constricted to 30 kms radius from Mulkanoor town which now falls under Warangal Urban district.

Against this backdrop, the MWCD signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to set up its parlours in 24 HPCL outlets situated in prime locations in the undivided Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad districts.

It’s learnt that MWCD will pay a rent of around Rs 3,000 to HPCL per each parlour for using the space and infrastructure of the company.

The parlours to sell products like milk, curd, ghee, sweet lassi, paneer and doodh peda. The deal also aims to involve the family members of the staff working in the bunks in running the parlours to provide additional income to the staff.

“It’s a win-win situation for both of us,” HPCL Karimnagar Area sales manager Y Vinay said, detailing the benefits of the pact they had with the MWCD. He said that they were confident of an increase in their business by providing customers additional facility at their outlets.

MWCD general manager M Bhaskar Reddy said: “Efforts are on to start the outlets from the Republic Day (January 26). This is an initiative to strengthen viability bridge between consumer and the range of quality products we produce.”

Referring to the success of Amul, an apex organisation of the Dairy Cooperatives of Gujarat, and the Karnataka Milk Federation which have set up their parlours in petrol bunks, he said that people who believe in quality products will have the benefit of fetching them at any time as majority of bunks works round-the-clock.
