The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has decided to provide continuous water supply on priority basis to about 200 slums in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits from February 1. In addition, the department is also contemplating to supply to the core city from the end of April.

A senior HMWS&SB official told The Hans India that at first the water board would supply as many as 58,000 connections in slums.

The official informed that the decision was taken after the State government instructed the water board to provide daily supply to residents in slums citing increase in waterborne diseases in those areas.

The official further said that water board would increase the daily supply to at least 1 lakh connections by February end and spread it to remaining areas in the city. He said that HMWS&SB has been trying hard to provide alternate day water supply to all peripheral areas by May. In addition, he assured that the Board would provide continuous drinking water to all residents during summer.

He said that the HMWS&SB has been supplying 356 million gallons day (MGD) water through Krishna Phase I, II, III (from Nagarjunasagar reservoir) and Godavari Phase I (from Mumur reservoir in Karimnagar district).

When queried if would be sufficient to fulfil the water needs of residents, he said that 356 MGD water would be enough to quench the thirst of the citizens if the same is supplied without leakages. He also said that the water board might be able to provide sufficient supply even if the board looses 120 million MGD from the Manjira/Singur reservoirs.
