Nizamabad: There are many people in the district suffering from Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder and according to reports, 35 people are suffering from it. What is worse is that those suffering from it are facing immense hardships in getting the right type of medical treatment. This is because there is no medical equipment to carry on blood transfusions in the hospitals of the district and those requiring it have to go all the way up to Hyderabad every 20 days. Doctors are also not available.

Speaking to The Hans India in the city on Tuesday, a father of one of the victims, Afzal bemoaned that he had to spend nearly Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 to go to Hyderabad every 20 days to get blood transfusion for his three-and-a half year old Faizal. If he had to get it done in some corporate hospital, he was forced to shell out more money, he lamented.

Families of such victims are facing several problems. Afzal said that although the Kaladevi Charitable Trust in the old city of Hyderabad supplies blood free of cost, it is always overcrowded as people from Maharashtra and Karnataka also come here to collect blood. It takes more than four hours to get the required blood, he added. For those suffering from Thalassemia, blood clotting does not take place easily and flows on continuously even in the case of a minor cut and as such, it needs urgent medical attention.

Afzal expressed surprise that there were no medical facilities in Nizamabad district to treat Thalassemia and wondered why the government was not taking any action in providing the facilities, like setting up a separate department for it in the district government hospital.

He said that some of the parents have become indifferent as they were unable to bear the huge financial burden. Some of the other parents said that they brought this issue to the notice of the District Collector but no action has been taken till now. They expressed the hope that the government would do something to mitigate the suffering of the children and their parents.
