Ugadi, the Telugu New Year festival was celebrated with gaiety in a very traditional manner in the town on Wednesday. In his message on the occasion, the District Collector K Limabarithi wished all the people around the district a very happy and prosperous new year.

Markets and temples around the district were teeming with people around making purchases and offering worship in various temples on the occasion.

The Ugadi pachchadi (traditional holy water mixed with tamarid and neem leaves) was distributed to the people at various places around the district. Many camps were organised where people moving around were offered the drink to depict all the tastes of life (sweet,sour and salty, bitter) to make people realize that each day of life is not the same and one has to realize that happiness and sorrow are two sides of the coin called life.

Speaking to The Hans India, one of the residents of the town Gangadhar, said that the Ugadi festival truly enlivens our lives by highlighting the rich traditions. It was due to such type of festivals that all the people come together to celebrate the spirit of togetherness and maintain family values, he added. This day is also celebrated as the Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and most of the Marathi speaking people around the district were seen in their traditional attire.

Panchanga sravana (almanac reading) was done and priests made predictions on how the new year will take shape. It was read out at various temples around the district. it was always a good feeling to see families come together to celebrate the festivals and bring back joy to our lives. Our morals and values do matter in a country like India which still stands as an icon with regard to the preserving of family values, he added.
