Bhadrachalam: Though the temple town is situated on the bank of River Godavari, the regular supply of drinking water has become a distant dream for the residents of this historical town. They have been questioning the officials as to why they were being put to such hardship when water was available in the river.
Moreover, the civic body has been using the pump filters and water tanks constructed that were constructed several decades ago despite the population crossing over 75,000 in the town. The 262 bore wells fitted with hand pumps in the town, which are maintained by the Gram Panchayat, have now, however, turned into mere ornamental pieces with drastic fall in ground water level.
Though the water is available in the river Godavari, the people of the town are forced to dependent on water tankers, with most of them even forced to purchase water from plants.
Speaking to The Hans India, Gram Panchayat secretary Ch Srinivas Rao said that the water was being supplied thrice a day using eight tankers to the people of 24 Wards.
M Renuka, leader of Mahila Sangham, said instead of spending lakhs of rupees on water transportation, water taps could be installed in each house to solve the problem forever.
Instead of concentrating on construction of roads and other developmental works, the officials should try to address water scarcity issues first, she added.
She said tap water released to houses once in two days was insufficient and demanded regular water supply.
Srinivasa Raju, Divisional Engineer of Public Health department, stated that they were releasing 12 lakh gallons of water every alternate day. However, there are only 3,700 tap connections in the town, he added.
A report has been submitted to the government to construct more water tanks to cater to the needs of the people, he said.
Congress leader B Ranga Rao said more tap connections should be sanctioned in the town. He asked the Panchayat officials to arrange water kiosks for the convenient of pilgrims with the cooperation of other departments.
