Mounted police to trot Warangal roads soon

The mounted police force could well be a huge attraction for a city that is already undergoing a massive makeover with the district administration taking up the task of beautifying the walls with mural paintings besides developing junctions.
It may be noted here that the Warangal Police Commissionerate that holds the record of achieving the distinction of being free from pending NBWs in the country twice, is keen to deploy a horse-mounted police force for some time.
Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu, who was instrumental in introducing a host of smart policing activities since he took over the reins of Warangal, is the man working behind the curtain for the deployment of mounted police unit.
Sudheer Babu, himself a horse-riding enthusiast, got the land required allotted for the construction of a stable near Matti Kota in Qila (Fort) Warangal that once boasted 20,000-odd horsemen under Pratapa Rudra, the last king of Kakatiya Dynasty, when Vakati Karuna was district collector last year.
Since then, he is pursuing the matter with the State authorities to procure funds and horses. It’s learnt that the Commissionerate procured 10 Thoroughbred and Kathiawari breed horses.
As of now, these horses are being trained at the Mounted Police Horse Riding Ground at Goshamahal in Hyderabad. The Commissionerate also deputed a team of constables to get the training at Gosha Mahal.
Against this backdrop, Law & Order Additional DGP Anjani Kumar, who laid the foundation stone for the stable on Friday, said, “Apart from extending its services, the mounted police force will also add colour to Greater Warangal.”
Speaking to The Hans India, Sudheer Babu said: “The construction of stable at an estimated cost of Rs 35 lakh will be completed in four to five months. Then the horses which are undergoing training in Hyderabad will be brought to Warangal.
The horseback policemen will be used in patrolling, bandobast and ceremonial occasions like Independence Day and Republic Day.”
He said the District Collector Amrapali Kata has also promised to extend her support in introducing the mounted police at the earliest.
