Luxettipet: This is another example for never ending woes of farming community. Right from the sowing, a farmer has to face several hardships till he gets remunerative price for the produce. The final and crucial stage is to sell his crop produce.

They have to undergo some tribulations to sell his produce. Though government has been setting up procurement centres, some unexpected issues have surfaced.

With the plentiful of rainfall, farmers could get better yield in this kharif. The main crop paddy was cultivated in 36,768 acres in the district.

The government has also set up 170 procurement centers in Mancheriyal District for the benefit of farmers. The centers were setup 15 days ago. Farmers started transporting their produce to the procurement centers.

But after purchase, paddy is not being shifted to godowns from the purchasing centres. The scarcity of gunny bags is also one of the reasons for delay in shifting the purchased produce to mills or godowns.

By Thursday, as much as 70, 000 quintals of purchased paddy was left at purchasing centres in the district. It is taking more than four days to shift paddy from the purchasing centres to godowns.

On the other hand, weather is also causing concern for the farmers. Sporadic showers and the cloudy sky are sending shivers down the spine. They are much worried that if same climate continues for some more days, the standing crop would be lost.

Even during the rain on Wednesday, officials failed to provide tarpaulin sheets to cover the produce, lying open in the market. Farmers had to bring covers on their own expenses. Farmers who already transported their crop to the purchasing centers have to guard their produce for day and night.

Unable to bear the official negligence, farmers held demonstrations and `rasta rokho’ on Friday. Laxettipet Market Committee Chairman B Tirupati assured them of fulfilling their demands.

The district civil supplies officer Bhaskar said that there was a delay in shifting of the paddy. A district level meeting with RDO, rice millers, officers of the purchasing agencies were also organised and immediate action would be taken, he said. He assured the farmers of moving thing fast so that no one would get affected.
