Hanamkonda: With the archaeological evidences suggesting that Jainism has once prospered ebulliently in Hanamkonda and had an extended run even during the times of Kakatiya dynasty, the State government has plans to promote tourism in addition to the ongoing developmental activity.

Thanks to Ramoju Haragopal, a member of the Committee on Telangana History, who recently deciphered that Hanamkonda was once a seat of Jain learning.

This in a way suggests that much before Kakatiyas built Orugallu Qila (Warangal fort), there lies a fort on Hanumadgiri, also known Gaggilaiah gutta, that has 35 feet carving of 3rd Tirthankara and 13 feet 23rd Tirthankara. These apart, there are seven other sculptures also.

The carvings believed to be of 4th century suggest that Jainism has its prominence in Hanamkonda region before Kolanpak, one of the famous Jain centres in the country.

Recently, district collector Amrapali Kata, State government adviser BV Papa Rao, Warangal West MLA D Vinay Bhaskar visited the hillock with a view to develop it as a spiritual centre to attract the tourists.

Speaking to The Hans India, Department of Culture Director Mamidi Harikrishna said: “With there is an ample of empty space available between Hanumadgiri and Padmakshi hillock, the ambience is picture perfect to turn it as the most sought-after destination in Hanamkonda.”

Stating that there is a lot to explore on Hanumadgiri hillock, he said that if the district administration comes up with a detailed project report (DPR) to develop a spiritual centre, garden and a mini open air theatre between the two hillocks, it will be forwarded to the State government which is giving high priority to Telangana culture.

It may be noted here that administration has already developed Padmakshi gundam (tank), which hosts annual Bathukamma fiesta, under Mission Kakatiya programme.

“With the funds already flowing in under HRIDAY, AMRUT and Smart City, efforts are on to develop the region before Bathukamma festival,” MLA D Vinay Bhaskar said.
