Jadcherla: Residents of the Suraram village are going through an identity crisis. Ask them the name of their village, pat come the reply--Suraram. However, they still have no answer to which mandal and district their village belongs to.

Earlier, the village was included in Balanagar mandal of Mahabubnagar district. The problem has arisen eight months ago when the State administration carved out new districts from the existing ones.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Villagers are clueless as to which mandal and district their village belongs to
  • Development schemes have become elusive as there is no clarity on the issue

According to Suraram sarpanch Sankaramma, the total population of Suraram and two tribal Thandas on its outskirts is 1,200. Upon creation of new districts, the village was included under Farooqnagar mandal of Rangareddy district. However, she contended that their village was not mentioned in the records either under the Balanagar mandal or the Farooqnagar mandal leaving them totally confused.

Meanwhile, the villagers feel that due to this confusion they were kept away from the development with that State government waiving no single farm loan. According to Narsimha, a villager and Lingaiah Yadav, a student, even Kalyanalakshmi scheme was not implemented.

The recently-introduced sheep units’ scheme also did not reach the village. Further, social welfare pensions, scholarships to students and other welfare schemes remained unimplemented in the village because of the identity crisis. Though the villagers have approached the officials of both mandals, their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Meanwhile, the Balanagar Tahsildar Rambabu denied inclusion of Suraram under Balanagar. Earlier, it was included under Balanagar, he said, adding that reports have been submitted to higher officials for clarity on the issue. He said the village was included under Farooqnagar mandal.

The state administration divided the existing districts to pave way for smaller ones for greater administrative convenience. But, it seems it became a bane for the people of Suraram. The responsibility to clarify on the identity of Suraram is rested with the rulers and the bureaucrats.
