Vexed with chilli, ryots turn to paddy, cotton this Kharif in Kothagudem
With chilli bringing tears to the growers with its rock-bottom price, the farmers in Bhadradri- Kothagudem are now switching to other crops. This Kharif, the farmers are going to cultivate paddy in 41,728 hectares and cotton in 36,647 hectares along with other crops.

The district Kharif plan also focuses on cultivation of maize in 5,741 hectares, green gram in 489 hectares, black gram in 211 hectares, red gram in 2,412 hectares, groundnut in 312 hectares, gingelly in 412 hectares, chillies in 6,842 hectares, sugarcane in 624 hectares and other crops in 24,302 hectares.
According to a report from Agriculture department, the farmers are gearing up to cultivate the crops as said above. As per the report, 21,600 quintals of paddy seeds, 10 quintals of jowar seeds, 1,700 quintals maize seeds, 270 quintals of green gram, 224 quintals of red gram and 438 quintals of groundnut would be needed.
The agriculture department is planning to supply them on subsidy to farmers during the Kharif. Meanwhile, the farmers in the district are busy securing loans for Kharif. During the last season, the support price for various commodities was not good. As a result, the farmers are finding it difficult to mobilise investment.
As half of the district experienced rains, they are anticipating that the Kharif would hold good for them. Most of them have been pledging their land to raise investment as loans from banks are hard to come by. They have been appealing to the banks to extend them loans as per the government’s assurance.
For want of loans, some of the farmers are approaching money lenders and relatives for investments. A Satyanarayana Reddy, a farmer belonging to the district, went on record stating that the farmers raised red chillies for the past several years and sustained losses.
They were now keen to raise pulses and cotton crops to get good yield and profits. He, meanwhile, appealed the government to contain the spurious seed menace and protect the farmers. Talking to The Hans India, District Agriculture Officer P Pratap said seeds and fertilizers would be supplied to farmers on time.
A report has been submitted to the government on the seed requirements of farmers. He advised the farmers to overcome the temptation to raise cotton crop instead focus on other crops. He advised them to take precautions while choosing the seeds.
