Bhadrachalam: With the date for distribution of sheep units to Golla and Kuruma communities approaching fast, the officials are apprehensive that they could not meet the deadline of June 20 as sufficient number of sheep is not available for distribution even in neighbouring states.
The State government had decided to distribute sheep to Golla and Kuruma communities at the rate of 21 sheep and one ram to everyone, who crossed 18 years. The selection of beneficiaries is already completed. However, they could not procure necessary number of sheep for distribution.
Picking the names of beneficiaries through draw, the officials have zeroed in on 5,527 beneficiaries in the first phase in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district. The rest of the 5,000 beneficiaries would be given next year.
A committee has been set up with Tahsildar, MPDO and mandal veterinary officer which would purchase sheep from Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh and Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh to distribute them to the beneficiaries from June 20.
Each unit cost is put at Rs 1.25 lakh, out of which 75 per cent would be subsidised by the State government. In effect, the subsidy amount is Rs 83,750 and each beneficiary has to bear Rs 31,250.
Though five days are left for undertaking the massive task, the committee is yet to purchase sheep from various sources. The officials were not in a position to explain the delay in procuring sheep.
Since Bhadradri-Kothagudem is totally agency area, the distribution should be handled through cooperative societies. There are 136 societies in the district.
However, district veterinary officer Dr Venugopal asserted that the distribution of sheep would commence on June 20 and assured the beneficiaries not to worry over the issue.
He said beneficiaries would be selected through draw from each society for the distribution of sheep. In the first installment 5,527 beneficiaries would be distributed and the rest would be given the next year, he added.
