Kothagudem: Two trade union leaders attempted suicide by scaling a tower at a mine on Wednesday, the seventh day of their indefinite strike.

Hundreds of workers gathered at the spot and raised slogans against the SCCL management and the government. There ensued a wordy duel between the workers and the police leading to prevalence of tension.

SCCL workers union area general secretary Pusam Veerabhadraiah and CITU leader Raghu climbed the tower seeking jobs under dependent quota for wards of SCCL workers.

Learning about it, area assistant manager and mines manager reached the spot and held discussions with the trade union leaders and gave them assurance that they would not harass the workers.

The workers descended the tower after a three-hour stay. As they showed the signs of ill-health because of the stay, they were rushed to Singareni hospital.

CPI district committee secretary SK Shabeer Basha, CITU leader M Narasimha Rao said foiling the strike being observed to fulfill just demands of workers is not proper.

They described the SCCL management statistics on production and worker attendance as rather cooked.
