Mahbubnagar: The unabated sale of spurious seeds by traders has been leaving the gullible farmers in the lurch and putting the Palamuru farming sector in doldrums for the last many years.

Having learnt about the illegal sale of spurious seeds, the Vigilance and Enforcement authorities recently in coordination with the Agriculture officials cracked down on traders and retailers and seized 2,045 kg of cotton seeds and 1,050 kg of Red Gram seeds, worth Rs 46.43 lakh, from traders in Bhootpur and Badepally markets in the district.

As the higher authorities identified lapses and dereliction of duties by the concerned local Agriculture officials, the government had even suspended two Agriculture officers from Bhootpur and Devarkadra mandals for not performing their duties properly.

“We have suspended two agriculture officials Ms Aswini Pankaja, from Bhootpur and Indira from Devarkadra mandals for neglecting their duties. We are taking strict action against officials for showing negligence and lackadaisical attitude towards their duties,” said Sucharitha, Joint Director Agriculture.

Apart from this, recently SP Rema Rajeswari had also taken strict action against erring police officials and suspended Bhootpur Sub-Inspector of Police for not taking action against the traders violating the law and selling spurious seeds to the poor farmers.
