Warangal: In what is termed as a huge benefit for the local unemployed youth of the region, a skill development centre (SDC), funded by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), is coming up in Warangal.

This as part of Centre’s Skill India programme aimed at developing training infrastructure for drivers, thereby creating more employment opportunities in the sector.

Aptly, the programme has been planned to launch on July 15, World Youth Skills Day, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Warangal SDC, which is coming up on the campus of Zonal Staff Training College located on the suburbs of the city, is one among the three allotted for the State under the programme.

It may be noted here that the Centre has roped in the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), which has 39 years of expertise in training, for operationalising the SDC.

The existing facility, which provides training to its staff, is said to be a huge advantage for the upcoming SDC as it can start its operations straightaway once the construction of classrooms and procurement of infrastructure is done.

Talking to The Hans India, the Warangal Regional Manager and in-charge Principal of the Zonal Staff Training College T Surya Kiran said: “Civil works on the proposed SDC have already began with the Centre releasing Rs 50 lakh of the total Rs 1 crore. In the next phase, an electronic driving test track which uses sensor technology.”

Stating that the college has cut-models of BS-III, BS-IV and BS-V engines, he revealed plans to procure driver training simulators to offer advanced training.

Initially, the SDC will offer two courses – heavy motor vehicle (HMV) and light motor vehicle (LMV) – with a 40-day training module. A certificate will be issued to those who complete the course successfully with which they can apply for driving licence at road transport authority (RTA).

The SDC has plans to train about 20,000 drivers in the refresher category and 2,000 in the induction (learners) category every year.

The cost of training will be met out of Prime Minister Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) of the Ministry of Skill Development.

This apart, it was also proposed to provide stipend from Road Safety Funds to the trainees, based on the daily minimum wage to compensate for loss of income during the training period, it’s learnt.
