Hanamkonda: Green chilli farmers, led by the Congress leaders, staged a sit-in near Warangal Rural District Collectorate here on Monday, demanding compensation and action against a seed company for selling spurious seeds.

Congress Parkal constituency in-charge Engala Venkatram Reddy said farmers, who sowed VNR-145 variety green chilli, incurred huge losses in Akkampet village under Atmakur mandal.

Even after three months into sowing, the crop witnessed the stunted growth, he said. Despite the issue being taken to the notice of the Horticulture Department, officials didn’t take any action, he alleged.

Reddy demanded government ban on the seed company besides making them pay compensation to the farmers. Meanwhile, the traffic came to a grinding halt in front of the Rural Collectorate near Kaloji Junction with protestors staging a sit-in on the road.

Following this, Collector Prashanth Jeevan Patil came out and assured the farmers to look into the matter within a week. Kisan Cell Warangal district president B Devender Rao and others leaders were present with the farmers.
