The victim, Anand (8), who has suffered 80 per cent burns, is undergoing treatment at Government General Hospital in Mahbubnagar. His condition is said to be critical.

Responding to the incident, Wanaparthy District Education Officer Sushindar Rao has said that he has constituted a three- member committee to inquire into the incident.

According to the statement by the student, he is said to have taken the extreme step after he was reprimanded and beaten up by his teacher for not reciting a Telugu poem in the class. The boy took the extreme step when his parents were away on work.

Upon hearing his screams, the neighbours put out the flames and rushed the boy to the Wanaparthy area hospital, from there he was shifted to Mahbubnagar General hospital for better treatment.

Meanwhile, DEO Sushindar Rao said, “It is really an unfortunate incident. To bring out the truth, we have constituted a three-member committee, which will visit the school, village and talk to the parents and everyone connected with the incident.

Very soon, a final report will be submitted to the Collector. Based on the facts, necessary action will be taken on the erring teacher,” informed the DEO.
