Hanamkonda: The leaders and members of Telangana Handlooms Workers Joint Action Committee (THWJAC) have appealed Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee leadership to establish a Handloom Cell in the party.

A large number of handloom workers led by the JAC leader Chippa Venkateshwarlu and city Congress working president Rajanala Srihari met the TPCC former president Ponnala Lakshmaiah and submitted a memorandum in Hanamkonda on Tuesday.

Explaining the need of establishing the cell, Venkateshwarlu stated that after farming, handlooms accounts for highest number of workers and they were not yet an organised workforce. By setting up the cell, the party could highlight their issues and would serve to address them.

Lack of proper budgetary allocation for the welfare of handloom workers was throwing the lives of thousands of workers engaged in handloom industry into doldrums. A Handloom Welfare Board should be set with a dedicated ‘Handloom Policy’ for the implementation of welfare measures, he said.

Responding to the appeal, Lakshmaiah assured the committee leaders to see that a Handloom Cell would be established soon in the state party by taking the issue to the notice of party high command in New Delhi.

Venkateshwarlu further wanted the Congress leader to ensure that handlooms workers in Warangal gets their due share in the proposed Mega Textile Park to be set up in Warangal rural district. Dhurries made by Warangal weavers were popular across the country but the state government was not promoting them.

The Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao, has promised to hold meetings with handloom workers in Sircilla and Pochampalli to address their issues while ignoring the interests of dhurries makers. In view of lack of proper market facilities, dhurries makers were suffering a lot, he noted.

About 200 handlooms workers, the party leaders K Sridhar, Kathy Venkataswamy, EV Srinivasa Rao, B Srinivas Rao and Venkat Reddy were among those, who met Lakshmaiah.
