Healthy lifestyle and early diagnosis key to keeping osteoporosis and calcium deficiency in check, says NSSH expert

“loss of calcium from bone and the early removal of the uterus during hysterectomy are the normal cause factors for osteoporosis. Onset of menopause after the age of 45-50 also makes women increasingly susceptible to osteoporosis. People who suffer from long-standing diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid and severe obesity are largely prone to osteoporosis. Those who are affected by kidney problems and are chronic chain-smokers are also largely at risk of contracting this deadly condition.” stated Dr Arbatti.

Women have a lower bone density than men and lose bone mass faster as they age, increasing their risk of contracting osteoporosis. Levels of estrogen, the hormone helping regulate a woman’s reproductive cycle, also determines the extent of osteoporosis in women. Elucidating on the measures needed to prevent osteoporosis, Dr Arbatti said, “a healthy lifestyle complimented with a daily fitness regimen of half an hour to 40 minutes of brisk walk can go a long way in preventing osteoporosis. Avoidance of irregular eating habits, smoking and tobacco consumption along with intake of calcium rich foods like milk, soya bean and tofu is highly recommended.” If osteoporosis is diagnosed, periodical tests like blood check-ups should be conducted and prescribed medications should be taken under expert medical supervision.

Along with osteoporosis, another modern-day health disorder that is afflicting millions of people is calcium deficiency. Natural aging process can lead to loss of calcium as the vital nutritional component is stored in the bones and as one ages it starts thinning or getting less dense. Malnutrition and malabsorbtion, a term used to describe the inability to absorb vitamins and minerals from food consumed, can also lead to calcium deficiency. Fatigue and weakness is a common occurrence among those afflicted with calcium deficiency. The clinical symptoms are a feeling of depression and a dip in excitement levels in matters of daily routine.

Young women are increasingly susceptible to calcium deficiency on account of falling levels of Vitamin D. A vital component in maintaining high bone density levels, Vitamin D can be augmented by daily exercise and walking in early morning sunlight. The DEXA scan and Vitamin D3 test are the widely recommended tests for diagnosing Vitamin D deficiency.
