The bright future of robotic surgeries
In a remarkable achievement, the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has completed 600 ‘Davinci Robot’ surgeries in the past five years. The announcement was made on the sidelines of launch of a dedicated Robotic counselling centre in the hospital on Thursday.

Inaugurated by Dr B Bhaskar Rao, CEO, KIMS hospitals, the counselling centre is a platform to educate patients and their near ones on the advantages of robotic surgeries, so that the patients and their family could take informed decisions on the protocols to be adopted under critical conditions. “Currently, there is a large gap in this understanding,” explained Dr Rao.
Commenting on the surgeries and launch, Dr G Suresh Kumar, gastrointestinal surgeon at KIMS Hospitals said, “Robotic surgeries are a new concept in India and not all departments across hospitals are using this effectively.
Many times it has been noted that even the doctors treating patients for critical conditions, are not aware of benefits of robotic surgeries in certain fields or its availability in India. It is unfortunate that the patients are not aware of the availability of robotic surgeries in certain specialisations like ENT, because very few hospitals in the country offer these services.”
Talking about the procedure to use the Davinci Robot, Dr Kumar said, “One needs specialised training and certification, which has to come from Intuitive Surgical’s, the parent arm of Davinci Robot, for licensing to use the Machine.
In 2009-10, there were only four to five doctors in the country, who were trained in Robotic surgery protocols. However, a huge thrust is being prophesied to this segment, and hence India is likely to witness a quantum jump in this arena.”
A surgical robot has four arms that can reach organs and areas that seemed dreadful for human fingers. The three-dimensional view with intense zooming helps the surgeons attain meticulous and unmatched results.
Surgical Robots combine the best of science, engineering and medicine. The major advantages of robotic surgery are to conduct the procedure under 3D vision, minimal blood loss, fast patient recovery, access to inaccessible areas in Human body and above all post-operative pain will be less.
Some of the doctors who were in charge of robotic programme were Dr Bhaskar Rao, CEO, Dr Jagdishwar Goud, Surgical oncologist, Dr Gopichand, Urologist, Dr Kavitha Naragoni, Gynaecologist, Dr Laksmikanth, Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Dr Madhu, Surgical oncologist, Dr Kalyan Charavarthy, ENT.
