Sensitising medical fraternity about Lupus
A day-long education session on ‘Systemic Lupus Erythematosus’ (SLE) was held at KIMS Hospitals in Secunderabad on Sunday that brought 200 specialists from the Telugu States to speak about the challenges and trends on the auto-immune disorder.

Organised by the department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology of KIMS the event was aimed at creating awareness among rheumatologists and clinical immunology specialists about the aspects of the disorder that need to be addressed.
Dr V Sharat Chandramouli, Clinical Director, Department of Rheumatology & Clinical Immunology, KIMS Hospitals, along with the organising committee members, Dr.Vijaya Prasanna Parimi, Dr. Srisaila Datta expressed happiness at the turnout and takeaways of the session.
Explaining more on Lupus, Dr Chandramouli said, “There is lack of awareness regarding Lupus disease not only among general population but also among those from the medical fraternity. Undiagnosed in early stage, SLE may be life threatening.
It has a varied presentation among patients ranging from very common symptoms like rash over skin on sun exposure, fatigue, hair loss, to severe manifestations like paralysis, cardiac stroke, recurrent abortions etc. and the manifestations are not similar in all.
As these patients have multiorgan involvement they seek consultation from respective specialist depending upon organ system involved leading to under diagnosis. Hence early diagnosis and prompt treatment help in decreasing the morbidity and mortality associated.”
Other aspects that were deliberated included didactic discussion on how to pick up Lupus patients in very early stages, common symptoms and organ manifestations, existing and newer available treatment options, how Lupus differs in presentation among the adults and pediatric population etc.
Earlier speaking after inaugurating the session, Dr Bhaskar Rao, MD and CEO, KIMS Hospitals, said there is utmost need to create awareness among patients as well as among medical faculty to save lives of hundreds of people suffering with this deadly autoimmune disease.
