In a medical miracle-like happening, a team of surgeons from Yashoda Hospitals in Somajiguda re-joined a cut off hand to a patient recently. The 18-year-old patient, Akhilesh Kumar was brought to the hospital about 10 hours after the accident.

The team consisting of Dr Sasikanth Maddu (Senior Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon), Dr Devender Singh (Senior Vascular Surgeon), Dr Sunil Dachepalli (Orthopedic & joint replacement Surgeon), Dr K Sashikiran (General Physician) and Dr Vasudev (Anaesthetist) replanted the hand of the rubber factory worker from Choutuppal.

Kumar while working with a rubber cutting machine had accidentally cut off his hand up to the wrist completely. The surgeons performed Plastic reconstructive & Micro-vascular surgeries to restore it in a marathon surgery.

Elaborating on the procedure, the Maddu said, “The cut-off part of the hand was placed in saline and preserved in the icebox to bring it to the city.”
“We evaluated his hand condition and the bone stabilisation initially. Later blood supply to the hand was restored,” said Dr Singh.

“As the there was a delay in bringing the patient with cut off hand to the hospital the team decided to wait for a day until the blood supply was stabilised. Later, the process of connecting the rest of the structure the hand like the bony skeleton, tendons and nerves were done. This laborious part of the surgery took eight hours. Within 48 hours after that patient has begun moving fingers of that hand,” he said.
