The annual ‘Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan’ organised by All India Radio in Hyderabad, this year, featured engaging Flute recital by S Shashank and Pandit Sukhdev Chaturvedi’s Dhrupad vocal concert. The evening started with a carnatic recital by the young maestro on Flute more famously known as ‘Master Shashank’. He started the concert with a Tyagaraja Kriti ‘Evarura Ninu Vinaa’ in Raga Mohana set to Mishra Chapu talam.

Then came Mysore Vasudevachar’s composition ‘Bhajana Seya Raade’ in Raga Dharmavati set to Roopaka talam. Shashank then played another Tyagaraja Kriti ‘Mokshamu Galadaa’ in Raga Saramathi set to Adi talam. The dexterity and speed of the fingers on the flute created mesmerizing waves of sound and proved the complete control that he has on his instrument.

Then, came a beautiful Vyasatirtha composition ‘Krishna Nee Begane Baro’ in Raga Yamuna Kalyani set to Mishra Chapu talam. The concluding item was a beautiful bhajan of Swami Brahmananda more popularized by Bharat Ratna Late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi ‘Jo Bhaje Hari ko Sada, Wahi Parama Pada Pavega’ in Raga Sindu Bhairavi set to Chaturasra Jathi Eka Talam. He was ably accompanied on Violin by Mysore Karthik, on Mridangam by Arjun Kumar and on Ghatam by Dr S Karthick.

Dhrupad recital by Pandit Sukhdev Chaturvedi, who has been trained in the Darbhanga Gharana began with raga Rageshree with an elaborate ‘Alaap’ in Gauharbani and Khandarbani style. He went on to bring out the nuances of each Swara from Mandra Saptak to Taar Saptak and concluded the recital with a beautiful Tarana. He was accompanied on Pakhawaj by Mohan Syam Sharma and on Sarangi by Munne Khan.
