Sixty four-year-old Andalamma gave a fresh lease of life to three terminally-ill patients even in her death as doctors at MaxCure Hospitals, Secretariat were able to utilise her organs that she donated under the Jeevandhan scheme.

Equally laudable is her family that displayed commendable generosity by donating both her kidneys and the liver to two renal failure patients and a liver disease patient.

Andalamma, a resident of Bahadurpura mandal was brought to the hospital on December 26 due to a head injury. She was declared brain dead by neuro surgeons later.

Speaking about the case on Wednesday, Dr Madhusudhan, Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist at the hospital said, “A 45-year-old patient from Mahaboobnagar had primary biliary cirrhosis.

He was awaiting a donor for the past year and half. We asked him to come in for surgery as soon as we received information regarding Andalamma. It was a 14 hours surgery which went smoothly and the patient could walk within 24 hours from the surgery.”

“A team of 15 doctors were involved in this liver transplant. The anaesthesia team under supervision of Dr RR Reddy played a huge role as it was a critical procedure.

The patient is doing well now and is ready for discharge,” said the doctor.

Dr AV Ravi Kumar, who performed the kidney transplant, said “We performed it on 40-year-old Tirupati Reddy. The patient had complete renal failure.”
