A Bharatanatyam recital by Sree Ranjani Umesh on Saturday evening was well received at Shilparamam. She is a student of Revathi Narasimhan and director of Raagini Sangeetha Nrithyalaya. She started with a Pushpanjali or flower offering through dance to the audience and it was followed by a Ganesh Krithi "Sri Vighnarajam Bhaje" in Nata Raaga. "Sabha Pathiki" describes Lord Nataraja dancing in the golden Sabha in Abhogi composed by Bharathiyar.
Sree Ranjani essayed the story of Bhakta Markandeya in a well-chosen sequence of poses and footwork. Her Abhinaya was excellent in a famous Javali "Parulanamaata" by Dharmapuri Subbaraya in Kapi is about a Swadhina Bhadruka Nayika who reassures her husband that he should forget the past of being disturbed in mind about another lady and live happily with her.
The concluding briskly done Thillana in Brindavani contained a short Abhinaya oriented episode on Lord Krishna. Akshatha Amin, a student of Mysore Nagaraj followed with a Kathak recital."Ajam Nirvikalpam" is an invocatory item about Lord Ganesha in Hamsadhwani sung by Shanbagh. It is a bit puzzling as no direct reference to the elephant-headed God is present, hence it is explained as offering obeisance to the formless or Nirvikalpa Vinayaka. "Mata Kalika" has both pure dance and expression.
The mother goddess in her fierce Avatar slays the Asura by drinking his blood and is finally stopped in her fierce rampage only by Lord Shiva blocking her path by lying down in front of her! Akshatha suitably performed the item in a thrilling manner. Geeth was a pure Nritta number showing the various musical instruments. The Chaturang in Raag Khamaj was in Four Parts namely Sahithya, Sargam, Tarana and Nruttha Bol. Prabhand by a Muslim poet had Todas and Parans. The finale was a magnificent Durbari Tarana of Persian influence choreographed by Maya Rao.
Ganeshamrutam, the curtain raiser for the forthcoming festival week was organised jointly with "PRAMAYAS", which promotes arts and culture. Sunitha Naidu and Hari Mangalampalli were featured among the Young Talents, in Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam respectively. The compositions performed were fitting to the occasion all on Lord Ganesha including "Gajavadana", "Pranava karam", "Sharanu Siddhi", etc.
