Keep those gates open!
Even as the residents living near 5th Avenue in Sainikpuri heave a sigh of relief after the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) brought down the gate that was illegally erected by colony members so that people could not use the arterial roads, there are several other colony residents in the Secunderabad Cantonment who are fighting against all odds to find a solution.

According to rough estimates, there are at least 19 colonies in the cantonment that close gates between 10pm and 11 pm. For instance, in Vikrampuri colony, a huge gate was erected a few years ago and only after protests did the residents keep it open. Madhava Rao, a resident of Ishaq Colony says, “There is a children’s hospital also and if the gate is closed it causes a lot of inconvenience.”
When asked, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) officials inform that they do get complaints about colony secretaries closing gates. A V S Rao, a retired employee and resident of Jalal Gardens in West Marredpally questions, “Who has given them the power to construct gates?
The civic authorities need to crack the whip and bring down the gates.”
For years now, the residents of Anupuram Colony in A S Rao Nagar have set up gates and keep closing them often. “They refrain from doing so only when someone objects but soon get back to their old habits,” says Madhuri, a local.
