Secunderabad: Incineration of garbage heaps in front of the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities at Manovikas Nagar has become a serious cause of concern for people living in the vicinity.

The unbearable stench of fumes coming from the burnt garbage piles suffocates not just the passersby but also motorists who use the route to reach the residential colonies at the other end of the land.

The unbearable stench of fumes coming from the burnt trash piles suffocates not just the passersby but also motorists who use the route to reach the residential colonies at the other end of the land. Moreover, the area has become a breeding ground for pigs and buffalos causing inconvenience to the public living near the areas.

Rajni, an MBA student said, “I live a road away from this dumping yard yet I feel nauseated in the evenings when the smell becomes even strong. During the rainy season, it is even more difficult to walk through these roads as all the trash gets flushed right onto the walkways.

There is no use of complaining to the authorities who would come regularly for a few days and then later bury the hatchet as if it never existed. Women have a lot of problems to use this route at nights. Motorists relieve themselves in the open spaces of the dump and sometimes even people consume alcohol here.”

A resident of Manovikas Nagar Colony, on condition of anonymity, reveals that earlier the Cantonment Board had installed a few dustbins in the open land to collect the disposed of wastes from the neighbourhood but eventually the dumpsters began to disappear leaving people from the nearby colonies and market yard to dispose the trash in the empty spaces.

Ever since the trash was left to pile up and instead of completely transporting the wastes regularly, the source accuses that the sanitation workers began to burn the heaps so as to cut down the costs of transportation.

Shashank, a bank employee said, “On one hand we are propagating the message of Swachh Bharat and on the other hand, we are not putting sufficient effort to live up to it. We cannot only blame the officials or the government. Even those who dispose of the wastes in this open land and also those who find no shame in relieving themselves here despite knowing that there are residences in the neighbourhood must also think about their actions.”
