Stiff opposition to move Charminar bus terminal
Days after the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) decided to stop buses to terminate and start at the Charminar Bus terminal, citizens are up in arms to thwart the move. The last day of the functioning for Charminar Bus Terminal was January 24 but buses plying even on Friday.

Highlights:
- Charminar Bus Terminal was constructed in place of a depot in 1989 taking extra land from the private property owners
- Property owners were promised that the terminal will be there in order to facilitate business
- Land cost at Charminar terminal is not less that Rs one lakh per sqft; the land is about 3 acres amounting to Rs 500 crore
- The State government has proposed to construct the multi-level parking near Chowmahallah Palace but there has been no progress
- RTC authorities announced to stop the bus shuttle from January 24 but people demanded it to continue
- Social workers and people are demanding the terminal not to be removed
The civic authorities are contemplating to construct a multi-level parking facility in place of the terminal and instructions were already issued to divert the buses.
Social workers and local activists are drumming support to keep the terminal and started a signature campaign. Hashmat Ali who started the campaign is getting support from the locals.
Hashmat Ali said that attempts to remove the bus terminal started in the year 2005 but people approached Human Rights Commission and court ordered the authorities not to raze the structure.
Local politicians also supported and assured to get the terminal to remain there. The State government is now planning to come up with a multi-level parking lot here.
There are different businesses that run on the floating population by virtue of Charminar Bus Terminal. However, authorities have systematically dys-functioned the terminal over few years now, Hashmat Ali lamented. Rahim, a resident of Moghulpura said, “A lot of people depend on the bus terminal by doing petty businesses. They would all lose livelihood.”
