Necklace Road: Commissioner of GHMC Dr Janardhan Reddy on Monday inspected the Necklace Road near the Secretariat where German technology of ’stabilisation road by recycling with additional cement and other chemicals’, is being used on an experimental basis.

It is eco-friendly and re-uses BT material reducing the utility of natural resources, say German representatives of Vishwa Samudra Engineering Company Valentine and Khado. An amount of Rs.2.5 crore is being spent on the 3.8-km stretch from Lumbini Park to Indira Gandhi statue on the Necklace Road.

Thanks to the use of the technology, the road will last for 20 years, Dr Reddy said later as it will prevent damage caused by heavy floods and avoid re-carpeting by using BT resulting in increased uneven levels casing hardships to the users. Laying of roads with this technology will cost Rs.55-65 lakh per km. Like the white-topping of a road, the technology will ensure that the roads will retain its quality for ten years.

The GHMC commissioner stated the quality control reports would be examined whether they confine to the Indian Road Congress standards. He said the use of the German technology in other City areas would be considered. Kerala R& B Chief Engineers Prabhakaran and Devaraj also inspected the road. Prior to the inspection the German team held a special meeting with Janardhan Reddy in his office.
