Elected people’s representatives allegedly in cohorts with the traders created an atmosphere at the market yards forcing the farmer to sell their produce to traders and middlemen.
Earlier red gram purchase centers have been set up and purchasing has been suspended without even purchasing at least 30 per cent of the crop available with the farmers.
Hitherto the market yards are limited to purchasing paddy, cotton and maize alone and pay no attention to lifting millets.
As a result, utter confusion prevailed among the farmers as they did not comprehend where to sell their millet crops.
As they have no alternative, they are forced to sell their produce to the private traders, who exploit the farmer to the hilt.
Normally, the farmers raise millets in an acre or two reaping a harvest of three or four quintals. To dispose of their produce, they prefer to approach the local trader and travel to the market yards, which are far off.
While the MSP declared for red gram was Rs 5450, the traders buy it for Rs 4500. Similarly,they buy green gram at Rs 5000 a quintal against the MSP of Rs 5575, ground at Rs 4000 a quintal against the MSP of Rs4450, gingelly at Rs 4300 against the MSP of Rs 5300 and Bengal gram at Rs 3800 a quintal as against the MSP of Rs 4400.
On the whole, the farmers are duped to the tune of Rs 10 crore in the district. The farmers want the state government to run the purchase operations at the agriculture market yards at least one week or ten days so that the farmer will be able to get remunerative price.
Farmers from Janagama, Nangunuru, Husnabad and Alairmandals bring their produce to the market yards, but no purchase operations take place here.
The officials and people’s representatives allegedly disheartened farmers stating that they will not get money on time if they sell their produce at the market yards.
The officials paid no attention to purchases made outside by private traders. Some of the farmers have been appealing to the state government that it was high time to resume millets purchase operations at the market yards.
The officials have been stating that purchase centers to lift Bengal gram and ground nut would be commenced soon. They told the farmers that a proposal has been sent to the government urging it to open a Bengal Gram purchase center at Gajwel.
