Secunderabad: The prostitution menace outside the Secunderabad Railway Station is now a thing of the past say police officials. The drive that started in the month of June 2016 has now borne fruit as scores of pimps and prostitutes who used to move around the area have now disappeared for good.
The Gopalpuram police station, inspector Janakiamma of Begumpet police station, inspector Ramachander Reddy who is now working in the West Zone and inspector Sridhar of Gopalpuram police station worked in close coordination with child welfare committee and Prajwala home shelter to stop the menace. Speaking about the operation, inspector Sridhar said, “Home guards even disguised themselves as prostitutes to nab pimps. Teams were deployed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. All the lodges were monitored and cordon searches were conducted.”
Officials say that the idea to start an operation was of DCP Sumathi. Janakiamma, inspector of Begumpet police station would spend hours and guide teams to nab people. In all more than hundred persons were rescued, counseled and sent to rescue homes and were armed with skills and equipment to start their own business. Many were provided sewing machines and some were given training to start food stalls.
Several pimps were sent to jail and some lodges were seized. Pimps who used to travel all the way to Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Odisha used to bring gullible women and they would be nabbed early in the morning at 4 a.m. when the train stops at the station.
