Finally, after months of hard work to turn the city clean, the effort put in by the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) is beginning to show the results. Though the results are not as dramatic as one would have desired, the civic body is struggling to make a mark.

Warangal: Finally, after months of hard work to turn the city clean, the effort put in by the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) is beginning to show the results. Though the results are not as dramatic as one would have desired, the civic body is struggling to make a mark.

Not long ago, Warangal joined the bandwagon of Swachhata App, an initiative of the Centre’s Swachh Bharat Mission that enables the citizens to lodge sanitation-related complaints of their city. The GWMC was ranked at 96 among the 500 urban local bodies when it joined the Swachh Sarvekshan on December 17, 2016.

Since then the civic body continued to climb up in the Swachh Sarvekshan rankings. As on Thursday, it surged to 36th rank nationwide. Currently, a total of 10,615 denizens of Greater Warangal have downloaded the Android Swachhata App.

The civic body has so far received 4,888 complaints on Swachh App and of which they solved 4,632. A total of 2,404 complainants expressed their satisfaction over response of the civic body.

Speaking to The Hans India, Mayor Nannapuneni Narender said: “The active participation of the citizens is the key to success. In a short time, GWMC will find a place in the top 10 of the Swachh Sarvekshan ratings.” He appealed to the people to register with the Swachhata App before February 28, the last date for the downloading of the app.

On the other hand, the WhatsApp number (9701999596), christened as GWMC Citizen Forum, launched by the GWMC providing an opportunity for the public to report their grievances is also getting a huge response.

Thanks to the Municipal Commissioner Sruthi Ozha, who keeps the officials on toes with her flash inspections. She is one of those officials, who lead with an example monitoring the civic issues right from the day break.

Speaking to The Hans India, Environmental Executive Engineer MC Balamuni said: “The WhatsApp Forum which includes Collector, Commissioner, people’s representatives, NIT professors and intellectuals is an open platform to discuss and share ideas pertaining to civic issues.”

Posting a message in the GWMC Citizen Forum WhatsApp group after his grievance was addressed, the retired civil surgeon Dr KLV Prasad, resident of Ramakrishna Colony in Hanamkonda, said: “I never saw such a speedy response from the Greater authorities.”
