Khammam: The Khammam two town police on Tuesday arrested three persons for carrying out tests on pregnant woman to ascertain the sex of unborn babies, in two private hospitals and scanning centres.

According to Commissioner of Police Tafseer Iqbal, the three accused were identified as Shaik Gaffar (44), resident of Vatsavai village of Bhimavaram mandal of Krishna district, Sampeta Ashok (39), resident of Jammibanda area and Arvapalli Srinivas (39), resident of VDO’s Colony of Khammam city.

Shaik Gaffar works as head compounder in Meenakshi Superspeciality Hospital situated at Mayuri Centre. While S Ashok is the manager of Sri Sri Hospital at Jayachandra Reddy Complex, A Srinivas is the owner of Cure Medical Shop situated at Mayuri Centre in Khammam city.

The Commissioner stated that the cases were registered against the three under Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and also under Section 420, 314 r/w and IPC 511.

Presenting the accused before media, the CP said on receiving the complaints that some persons were carrying out sex determination tests and encouraging female foeticides, the officials of the Health and Police departments conducted raids and arrested the accused.

Stringent actions will be taken against the persons involved in female foeticides by conducting sex determination tests illegally in the hospitals and scanning centres, warned the CP.
