Bhadrachalam: Minister for Roads and Buildings Tummala Nageswara Rao said that the State government has come up with Sitarama Lift Irrigation Project in order to turn barren lands into fertile.

He performed Bhoomi Puja for the construction of pumphouse in BG Kottur of Aswapuram mandal on Tuesday. Addressing a public meeting, the Minister said they have started the project at an estimated cost of Rs 1,455 crore. The project would irrigate five lakh acres and benefit farmers of 272 villages, he said, assuring the people of completion of project in 24 months.

Tummala further blamed the earlier rulers for neglecting the irrigation projects. “Sitarama Project is the brainchild of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao,” said Tummala, lauding the CM for taking up Kaleswaram, Tupakulagudem and Aswapuram lift irrigation schemes. The Minister said the state government was ready to spend money for the development of agriculture sector.

“Kaleswaram will be taken up as National project if Prime Minister Narendra Modi supports it,” the Minister said, adding that government has sanctioned Rs 7,926 crore for construction of the project, which would be taken up in three phases.

“Earlier, the Sitarama project was designed to store 12,000 cusecs of water, later it was reduced to capacity of 9,000 cusecs. Bhakta Ramadasu canal would irrigate 70,000 acres of land in Khammam,” he informed.

Lauding the farmers who gave away lands for the project, Tummala promised better compensation. He advised the officials to give importance to the oustees and directed the officials concerned to build road to the village. Pinapaka MLA Payam Venkateswarlu presided over the event.
